Voting for Gladbach's 2022 goal of the year now open

From now until 14 December, Borussia fans can vote for the goal of the year for 2022. Ten goals are up for selection, scored by seven different Foals players.

Which player scored “Borussia’s goal of the year 2022” and, therefore, becomes the successor to Breel Embolo who won last year’s title with his overhead kick from the previous season? There are ten goals to choose from. Marcus Thuram, Alassane Plea and Ramy Bensebaini are the players with two goals on the list, whilst Lars Stindl, Jonas Hofmann, Manu Koné and Patrick Herrmann round off the list with each having one goal. You can vote right away and the poll stays open until next Wednesday, 23:59 CET. Voting can be found on the Foals app.

Goal 1: Manu Koné (21/22 Bundesliga, Borussia 1-2 Union Berlin)

His first goal in a Gladbach shirt was a beauty: after a strong solo run from Breel Embolo and a fine final pass from Jonas Hofmann, Manu Koné flicks the ball into the left corner of the goal from the edge of the box to bring Borussia level. It was the Frenchman’s first competitive goal for the Foals. Unfortunately, Koné’s goal could not prevent defeat as Borussia went on to narrowly lose the game 2-1.

Goal 2: Marcus Thuram (21/22 Bundesliga, Borussia 2-2 VfL Wolfsburg)

On matchday 23 of last season, Borussia overturned a 2-0 deficit against Wolfsburg into a 2-2 draw. Marcus Thuram was responsible for the equaliser when he headed Alassane Plea’s cross into the right hand corner of the goal.

Goal 3: Alassane Plea (21/22 Bundesliga, VfB Stuttgart 3-2 Borussia)

Gladbach scored with their first attack of the game: Alassane Plea passed to Florian Neuhaus, who chipped it directly back into the path of the oncoming Frenchman. Plea leaves the whole Stuttgart back line lost for where and volleys it into the corner of the goal.

Goal 4: Alassane Plea (21/22 Bundesliga, VfL Bochum 0-2 Borussia)

Yet again it’s Plea, yet again it’s a volley: following a corner from Luca Netz, the striker peels off his defender and rifles it into the back of the net from about the penalty spot. Later in the game, Breel Embolo doubles the Foals’ lead (61’). But only eight minutes later the game is abandoned after a fan throws an object at one of the referee’s assistants.

Goal 5: Ramy Bensebaini (22/23 Bundesliga, Borussia 3-1 TSG Hoffenheim)

The first matchday of the current Bundesliga season saw Ramy Bensebaini deliver an absolute stunner at the BORUSSIA-PARK. After a corner from Hofmann, Ko Itakura headed it back into the middle, where Bensebaini, facing away from goal fired a very aesthetically pleasing bicycle kick into the bottom right corner to make it 1-1. After half-time, Marcus Thuram and Nico Elvedi both got on the scoresheet to secure a victory in the first game of the season.

Goal 6: Jonas Hofmann (22/23 Bundesliga, FC Schalke 04 2-2 Borussia)

The assist for this one was, with no shadow of a doubt, “world class” – as Thuram slipped through Jonas Hofmann with a delicious backheel . Hofmann then took the ball in the area and cut inside past the Schalke defender Alex Kral, before rifling low into the bottom left corner to level proceedings – simply a gorgeous goal!

Goal 7: Ramy Bensebaini (22/23 Bundesliga, Borussia 3-0 RB Leipzig)

At home, Saturday night, under the lights – and a 3-0 win against RB Leipzig. Borussia fans, what more could you want? Gladbach brought what was perhaps the best performance of the season to date, and it was Bensebaini who put the icing on the cake. Having brought down an inch perfect cross from Lars Stindl in the area, the Algeria international kept his cool, and dinked over Peter Gulacsi to put the game to bed.

Goal 8: Lars Stindl (22/23 Bundesliga, Borussia 5-2 1. FC Köln)

After a 3-0 home win against Leipzig, the Foals were feeling buoyed going into the following week’s derby at the BORUSSIA-PARK against 1. FC Köln, and left this game with a result too. Ultimately, Gladbach came away with a dominant 5-2 win, with skipper Lars Stindl involved again. Just moments after the restart, Gladbach won the ball high up the pitch and Stindl was in possession from about 20 yards, taking two touches before lashing the ball with stunning power past a helpless Köln goalkeeper into the bottom right corner.

Goal 9: Marcus Thuram (22/23 Bundesliga, Borussia 3-1 VfB Stuttgart)

This is another one where the beauty of the goal came from the build-up. Alassane Plea took possession on the left hand side before playing a perfect through ball with the outside of his foot to Thuram, who was never going to make a mistake in front of goal, opening up his body and netting from close range. Stuttgart did get one back, however…

Goal 10: Patrick Hermann (22/23 Bundesliga, Borussia 3-1 VfB Stuttgart)

…Gladbach ensured they took all three points in added time through Patrick Herrmann. Manu Koné played it across to the midfielder who then took a perfect first touch, allowing him to turn on the pace and make a beeline for the penalty area, coming in from the right hand side. He opened up the face and scored confidently to confirm Borussia’s fifth home win of the season. Absolutely everyone was delighted for Hermann when he scored, including Jonas Hofmann, who commented: “Then Flaco came into the game, got the goal and completely brought the house down. It was exactly what we needed at the stadium."
