Torben Müsel joins Rot-Weiss Essen

Attacking player Torben Müsel has left Borussia after four and a half years to join third-tier side Rot-Weiss Essen on an immediate transfer.

"When Torben joined us from Kaiserslautern in summer 2018, our shared goal was for him to work his way into the first team and develop him into a Bundesliga player. There are of course no guarantees for that happening; there are a lot of conditions that a young player needs to meet," said Borussia's sporting director Roland Virkus. "Ultimately, he was unable to establish himself against stiff competition in our attack, so the best thing for him is to make a new start at a new club. We wish Torben all the best for the future!"

Bundesliga debut in Paderborn

After coming through the ranks at SV Obersülzen and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Müsel arrived at Gladbach as an 18-year-old in summer 2018, scoring eight goals in 30 Regionalliga appearances for the U23s in his first season. A long-term knee injury sidelined Müsel for much of the following campaign. He returned to action for the reserves of 8th March 2020, before the Regionalliga season was paused and later cancelled due to the pandemic. The attacker's Bundesliga debut for the Foals followed around three and a half months later, coming on as a late sub in an away game against SC Paderborn on the penultimate matchday.

Müsel also missed a good chunk of the 2020/21 campaign due to another injury, only making one cameo appearance for the U23s. However, the now 23-year-old fought his way back to fitness and netted eight goals in twelve reserve games last season, while also getting another taste of Bundesliga football in Borussia's home match with Greuther Fürth. A loan to Belgian top-flight side KAS Eupen followed in January 2022, where he made ten competitive appearances. After returning to Mönchengladbach, Müsel continued to feature for the club's U23s this term, scoring five goals in ten Regionalliga games, but wasn't used in the first team.

Borussia wishes Torben Müsel all the best in the future both on and off the pitch!
