Lainer: “Their goals were too easy for them”

Stefan Lainer spoke to the media after Friday’s 4-0 defeat at 1. FSV Mainz 05. We have summarised the right-back’s thoughts.

Stefan Lainer on…

…the game: We played well in the first half against a strong Mainz side, but we weren’t able to take the lead and instead went behind. We all felt that we could turn the game around during the half-time break. Mainz were really clinical in the second half and suddenly it was 3-0. It’s hard to explain why we collapsed like that. It’s unacceptable and I’m sorry for our fans who supported us brilliantly once again. We didn’t do their support justice tonight. We were in the game but their goals were too easy for them.

…the goal that made it 2-0: It was a difficult moment. We said at half time that we wanted to attack them and turn the game around. It was a really bad time to concede a second goal.

…the Foals’ current defence: We have to keep on working on the basics in training and during games. We had chances too, but Mainz were really clinical and we made a few mistakes that helped them out too. They punished us and that was the difference in the end. The fact that we lost 4-0 was really disappointing and was unacceptable.

…missing the chance to win back-to-back games for the first time this season: We are obviously thinking about it. We can’t be accused of not wanting success. We felt good before the game and at half time. We were full of motivation after the Bayern win and we wanted to build on it to record back-to-back victories for the first time this season. It wasn’t easy and Mainz did really well.
