Gerardo Seoane is Borussia’s new head coach – restructure of the sporting management

Gerardo Seoane has been appointed as Borussia Mönchengladbach’s new head coach. The 44-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the club. Nils Schmadtke has been named as the club’s new sporting director.

Seoane was most recently head coach of Bayer Leverkusen from July 2021 to October 2022. Prior to that, he was in charge of Young Boys in Switzerland, with whom he won three consecutive league titles and one domestic cup trophy. Patrick Schnarwiler (assistant coach) and Nicolas Dyon (fitness coach) will join the club as part of Seoane’s coaching team. “Gerardo Seoane has been successful for several clubs over the past few years. He’s a young coach, but one with lots of experience. He plays the style of football we want to see here. We’re pleased that he’s our new head coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach,” said Roland Virkus, managing director for sport at Borussia.

Aside from the decision to appoint a new head coach, Borussia have also changed the structure of the club’s management. The new position of sporting director for the first team will be taken over by Nils Schmadtke on 1st July. Schmadtke (34) has recently been working as the chief scout at VfL Wolfsburg.  Dr. Philipp Schützendorf (41), previously head of analysis at Borussia, will become the head of development, which incorporates talent development and video and data analysis.

“These changes will see us cover more bases in the future,” explained Roland Virkus. “Nils Schmadtke will take over the organisation of the first team and will be part of the leadership team alongside myself and Steffen Korell (director for scouting and squad planning). With Philipp Schützendorf leading the development team after our restructure, we are looking for sustained improvements to our first team and academy talents.”
