#SCFBMG: Match reaction

After the Foals’ 3-3 draw at SC Freiburg, we have the reactions of Julian Weigl, Christoph Kramer and the two head coaches Gerardo Seoane and Christian Streich.

Julian Weigl: We saw a game of two halves today. We were the better team in the first half, and in the second Freiburg put on a huge amount of pressure. We did defend with our lives and definitely wanted the win, but Freiburg were the dominant team in the second half. That means a draw wasn’t entirely unfair. But of course it’s still incredibly painful for us. When you lead 3-1, you want to take all three points. That’s why we’re all very disappointed.

Christoph Kramer: Looking at the game as whole, a draw was the fair result, but when you’re leading in injury time and then concede an equaliser from a penalty, of course it’s very bitter. But in view of the game as a whole, we’ll take the deserved point. After going two goals up, we initially concentrated on staying secure and defending well. Despite this, we should have been more active in the game and not just tried to keep the result the same. If we’d managed to hold on to the narrow lead until the end, it would have been exactly right to have played that way. Because the equaliser happened, we have to blame ourselves for becoming too passive in the second half.

Head coach Gerardo Seoane: It was an entertaining game. From the first to the last second, both teams tried to play an attacking game. We started the game very badly. Freiburg completely dominated the first quarter of an hour and deserved to take the lead. After that, we had a good hour, with lots of phases of possession and counterattacking situations. After the second goal we conceded, we stopped trying to get out. We sat far too deep and were no longer able to stop the ball from going into our penalty area. The equaliser was coming in the final stages and that sadly went on to happen.

Head coach Christian Streich (SC Freiburg): We started the game well and deserved to take the lead. We then let ourselves concede from a free kick, even though we knew this routine perfectly. We can’t let that happen to us. Then we conceded another goal, and then a penalty. We sat in the dressing room and thought we were in the wrong place. In the second half, the team remained calm and put on a lot of pressure. There were lots of corners and goalscoring chances for us. In the end, it finished well for us and in my eyes, it was very well-deserved that the team still managed to get a draw. But I’m unhappy that we played into the opponents’ hands with our poor defending.
