Match facts ahead of #InterBMG

Gladbach face Internazionale in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening (21:00 CEST). Get all the important facts and need-to-know information ahead of the Foals’ trip to Milan.

Spectators

  • According to UEFA rules spectators are allowed to fill up to 30% of stadium capacity, so long as this complies with local regulations. Away fans will not be permitted for the time being. How many fans are actually able to enter the ground is decided by area, with the local authorities having the last word on the matter.

Competitive record between Inter Milan and Borussia

  • To date, there have been four officially recorded matches between the two teams. The record is perfectly even with one win apiece and two draws.
  • In the 1971/72 season, the two teams met in the quarterfinal of the European Cup. The Italians triumphed 4-2 in Milan on 3rd November before a goalless draw in the return leg on 1st December.
  • That 0-0 was actually a replay of a match that Gladbach had initially won by a huge 7-1 scoreline. The original match took place on 20th October 1971, but the result was wiped from the record books after Inter’s Roberto Boninsegna was hit by a drinks can and was declared unfit to continue. Inter protested, the result was annulled and Borussia ended up exiting the European Cup.
  • In 1979/80, the Foals met Inter again in the second round of the UEFA Cup. The first leg ended 1-1 at the Bökelbergstadion, before Borussia won 3-2 after extra time at the San Siro. The Foals went on to lose in the final.

Statistics – presented by UNIBET sports betting

  • Borussia took part in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League, but exited in the group stage. Marco Rose’s team finished in third, behind Istanbul Başakşehir and Roma, with two wins, two draws and two defeats.
  • The Foals are yet to progress past the group stage in either of their two UEFA Champions League campaigns to date.
  • Borussia have won two of their last three matches (one defeat) in European competition, but just three of the last 13 (six draws, four defeats).
  • Gladbach are unbeaten in their last three matches against Italian opposition (two wins, one draw).
  • The only loss suffered in Borussia’s last seven trips to Italy (three wins, three draws) came in Rome, when the Foals lost 2-0 to Lazio in the 2012/13 Europa League round of 16.
  • This is the 14th time that Inter have appeared in the Champions League group stage, and their third consecutive appearance after missing out for six seasons in a row between 2011/12 and 2018/19.
  • Last season’s Serie A runners-up (they finished just one point behind Juventus) were the last Italian side to win the competition. Inter lifted the trophy for the third time in 2010.
  • Inter Milan, finalists in the UEFA Europa League last season, haven’t reached the Champions League knockout rounds since 2011/12.
  • Last season, Antonio Conte’s men finished in third place in their group, behind Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund. The Italians picked up seven points from their six matches.
  • Inter have won just two of their previous ten games in the UEFA Champions League (three draws, five defeats).

Referee

  • The match will be officiated by the Dutchman Björn Kuipers. The 47-year-old has been a FIFA-licensed referee since 2006 and has taken charge of 62 Champions League matches, including two fixtures featuring the Foals – a group stage match against Juventus in 2015/16 (1-1) and a loss to Manchester City (4-0) the following season. That same season, he refereed Borussia’s Europa League quarterfinal match against Schalke 04 (1-1).
  • On Wednesday evening, Kuipers will be assisted by his fellow countrymen Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra. The fourth official is Allard Lindhout, with Danny Makkelie in charge of VAR.
