Neuhaus: “We are really angry”

After the 1-1 draw with FC Augsburg, Florian Neuhaus spoke about the goal he scored, conceding late on and the blueprint for improvement.

Florian Neuhaus on...

…how the match went: I don’t think that Augsburg were emboldened by the red card. I felt that they sat even deeper and that we had even more control of the ball. They stopped pressing us, which actually helped us. But we were static too often and there were too many times when we gave the ball away cheaply. We were too impatient and we weren’t able to wait for our chances to arrive to kill off the game.

…the result: We are really angry about conceding late on. We can’t let that happen. We went ahead early on, but after that it was a fairly even game that we never had 100% control of. After the sending-off we had to see out the game and we also should have scored to increase our lead. We didn’t manage that yesterday and that is really annoying.

...areas for improvement: We gave the ball away too easily. We made too many simple, technical mistakes at times when we should have kept moving and not allowed ourselves to lose the ball. That can’t happen to us – at times like that we just have to play with more patience and keep possession, especially since Augsburg were offering us plenty of space already. In such situations maybe we ought to have played the ball around the back some more before trying again from a different position. We should have let the Augsburg players chase us while we waited for the right moment.

…his goal: The goal isn’t my first priority. For me, there aren’t many positives to take from the game. I’m not satisfied because we drew 1-1 at home in a match that we should have won.
