Facts and stats ahead of #RMABMG

Get all the important facts and stats before the Foals travel to Real Madrid for the final game of the UEFA Champions League group stage on Wednesday night (21:00 CET).

Attendance:

  • Real Madrid are currently playing their home games in the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano instead of the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, which is located at their training ground outside of the city centre, in the Valdebebas district. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the match between the Galacticos and Borussia, like all games in Spain at the moment, will take place behind closed doors.

Head-to-head record:

  • It will be the sixth competitive game between Real Madrid and Borussia. The head-to-head record to date is even, with each side winning one match. Three of the games were drawn, including the reverse fixture on matchday 2 of this Champions League season (2-2).
  • Real scored two late goals at BORUSSIA-PARK on matchday 2. Karim Benzema (87’) and Casemiro (90+3’) rescued a point in Mönchengladbach after Marcus Thuram (33’, 58’) had given Borussia a 2-0 lead.
  • The first meeting between the sides was in the quarter-finals of the 1975/76 European Cup (2-2 at home, 1-1 away). Real Madrid progressed to the next round due to the away goals rule. Referee Leonardus van der Kroft was at the centre of attention, after several questionable decisions in the second leg made life difficult for Borussia.
  • The third round of the 1985/86 UEFA Cup was a memorable affair. Borussia won the first leg 5-1 in Düsseldorf, but Real were able to turn things around with a 4-0 win in Madrid. Santillana scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute. A four-goal deficit from the first leg has only been overturned four times in UEFA competitions since.

Statistics:

  • Nothing in Group B has been decided as of yet. All four teams have the chance to reach the knock-out stages ahead of the final group stage games.
  • Borussia lead the table with eight points after five games, followed by Shakhtar Donetsk who are level on points with Real Madrid with seven points. Shakhtar visit Inter, who trail in Group B with five but could still qualify.
  • The Foals will qualify for the round of sixteen as group winners with a victory in Madrid, but a draw will also suffice to progress to the knockout stages. Should Inter and Shakhtar draw, Borussia would qualify even with a loss against Real.
  • Unlike the other three teams in the group, the Foals cannot finish in last and will therefore make it into the Europa League at the very least.
  • Borussia have won four of their last eight games in the Champions League (two draws and two defeats), however in the last 18 games there have been only five wins in total (eight draws and five defeats).
  • The Foals are undefeated in seven Champions League away games since the 4-0 loss to Barcelona in the 2016/17 season, with three wins and four draws.
  • Borussia are travelling to Spain for the ninth time, however the Foals have not won at a La Liga club since their 4-2 victory in the first away game at Real Zaragoza in the UEFA Cup in the 1974/75 season.
  • The 4-2 home win over Sevilla in the 2015/16 group stage is Borussia's only victory against a Spanish team in their last 12 matches (three draws, eight defeats).
  • The Foals have only lost two of their last 14 competitive matches (six wins, six draws).
  • With nine goals conceded in five matches, Real Madrid have conceded more goals than ever before in the group stages of the Champions League.
  • This season sees Real participate in the Champions League for a record 25th time alongside fellow Spaniards FC Barcelona. They have reached the knockout stages in all 25 seasons, which is also a Champions League record.
  • Real Madrid have reached the last sixteen in three of the last four seasons as runners-up of their group.
  • The Spanish champions have been knocked out in the round of sixteen in the last two seasons, with last year’s exit coming courtesy of two 2-1 defeats to Manchester City.
  • Real have won only three of their last nine matches in the Champions League (two draws, four defeats), and have lost seven of their last 16 matches (six wins, three draws).

Officials:

  • Björn Kuipers from Oldenzaal, the Netherlands will be in charge of the game. The 47-year-old has been a FIFA referee since 2006 and has refereed 54 Champions League games and twelve Champions League qualifiers – including three games involving the Foals. He took charge of Borussia’s 2-2 draw at Inter Milan this season. He was also the referee when the Foals lost 4-0 in the 2016/17 Champions League group stage, as well as in the 1-1 draw in the 2015/16 season with Juventus. Kuipers was in charge for the first leg of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie against FC Schalke 04 (1-1).
  • Kuipers’s assistants on Wednesday night will be fellow countrymen Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra. Allard Lindhout will be the fourth official, and Pol van Boekel will be in charge of VAR.
