“We showed real character” - Hertha match reaction

We heard from both camps following Borussia's 1-1 draw with Hertha Berlin on matchday 11 in the Bundesliga.

Breel Embolo: I was a little surprised to hear this morning that I would be captaining the team, but I was obviously delighted. The way the game played out was unfortunate for us – we’re a little disappointed, but we also know that it wasn’t a bad performance. We played the better football in the first half, the chances just didn’t come. Then we were punished for one mistake after the break. We showed real character after their goal and delivered a good response. We really wanted to get the win at the end, but sadly we ran out of time. The guys that came into the starting line-up added some freshness and everyone in the team did a good job. The subs that came on worked hard for the team immediately and helped us get the equaliser. We have a big squad and we have a lot of games still to come.

Marco Rose: It was a solid first-half performance, albeit without doing anything particularly special. The lads who came into the side did a good job and grew into the game more and more. Then we ended up going behind right at the start of the second half. I was really impressed with how we reacted though. We played really well for the rest of the game. It was also a good response to the Real Madrid match, which none of us were happy with. The lads gave a lot more out there on the pitch in spite of the busy schedule in recent weeks. It’s just a shame that they couldn’t reward themselves with the three points.

Hertha Berlin head coach Bruno Labbadia: It was a game that we could have won just as easily as we could have lost it. It was an intense match for both teams. We wanted to put Gladbach under pressure and we did that well in the first half. We should have done more with possession when we won it back though. We were too passive after going ahead; we didn’t apply pressure in the final third and were more reactive than proactive. We did have a good chance through Lukebakio though that needed a brilliant save from Sippel. We defended well, just like in Leverkusen. We can see that we’re progressing. The boys are implementing the things that we’re discussing with them.
