“Bitterly disappointing” - Dortmund match reaction

We gathered the thoughts of the players and coaches after Borussia’s 1-0 DFB-Pokal quarterfinal defeat to Dortmund on Tuesday night.

Matthias Ginter: It was a close game. I think we were more in the game in the first half, but then Dortmund had more room to work with after the break. It was clear that whoever scored first would hold all the cards. We obviously can’t lose the ball as easily as we did ahead of their goal – that was very annoying. It’s a painful defeat. We really wanted to win the cup, so it’s bitterly disappointing, but now we have to pick ourselves up. For three or four weeks we were on a great winning run, but now we’ve gone four or five weeks more or less without a win. We have to pull together and get back on track.

Jonas Hofmann: It was an avoidable defeat. I thought it was a decent performance from us all in all, particularly in the first half. There are a number of good opportunities for us that spring to mind. We didn’t quite apply the same pressure in the second half and ultimately, we didn’t do enough to put the ball in the back of the net – that’s our only real shortcoming today. Anyone who watched the game knows that Marco Rose’s decision to join Dortmund didn’t have any effect on the match. We were on top for the most part, played good football and transitioned well. We just weren’t incisive enough. It’s a real shame as we really wanted to win. We obviously need some positive results soon and have to start winning games again.

Marco Rose: I think that we started the game well and had a good first half. We kept Dortmund under wraps, although there was one ball that got through that resulted in a good chance for Erling Haaland. We won the ball back well and had some good approach play, getting into dangerous areas around the box. BVB were better after the break and found more space, although we continued to put up some good resistance. We had a great chance to go ahead through Ramy Bensebaini, but Marwin Hitz made a top save. We then conceded from a counterattack, which is tough to take. The lads gave it their all at the end. My team fought hard and I think it was an unlucky defeat. We would have loved to have gone through to the next round, plus it would have given us a real boost.

Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic: The first half was alright. It wasn’t great, but there weren’t many goalscoring opportunities. We had the best one if you don’t count Gladbach’s offside goal. Both teams sort of cancelled each other out. We had hoped to have a little more of the ball – we didn’t keep hold of it well enough in the first half. We fixed that after the break and had more drive going forward. We managed to create a number of goalscoring opportunities, so I think it was a deserved win.
