Bénes named in Slovakia preliminary squad for EUROs

László Bénes, who is currently out on loan at FC Augsburg, has been selected in Slovakia’s preliminary squad for this summer’s UEFA EURO 2020 that will run from 11th June to 11th July.

Borussia loaned László Bénes (photo: imago/ DeFodi) to FC Augsburg for six months earlier this season so that the 23-year-old could pick up playing experience there. The midfielder has featured in eleven of Augsburg’s fourteen games during this time and has attracted attention thanks to his strong performances. The reward for this has now come, with Slovakia head coach Stefan Tarkovic naming Bénes in his preliminary squad for the European Championship.

24 players will meet for a training camp in Windischgarsten in the coming week, while a further 28 players are on a second list and could also make it into the final 26-man squad. “We will announce the final squad for the EUROs at the beginning of June,” said Tarkovic.

Slovakia play two warm-up friendlies ahead of the European Championship. The first of these is against Bulgaria on Tuesday 1st June at 18:00 CEST and the second is five days later against Austria on Sunday 6th June at 17:30 CEST. At the European Championship, Slovakia face Poland in their opening group stage match on Monday 14th June at 18:00 CEST, followed by Sweden on Friday 18th June at 15:00 CEST and finally Spain on Wednesday 23rd June at 18:00 CEST.
