Embolo scores in 1-1 draw vs. Wales

Switzerland drew 1-1 with Wales in their opening group game at EURO 2020. Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi, Denis Zakaria and Breel Embolo all featured on Saturday afternoon.

In front of 30,000 fans in Baku, Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic selected Sommer, Elvedi and Embolo in his starting XI. Zakaria came off the bench in the 66th minute. Although the Swiss were the better of the two sides in the first half, Yann Sommer had to make a brilliant save after a quarter of an hour to keep the scores level.

Embolo puts Switzerland ahead

Switzerland continued to control the game in the second period and soon took the lead. Breel Embolo headed home from a corner after 49 minutes. The 24-year-old attacker remained dangerous, setting up a good chance for Wolfsburg’s Kevin Mbabu (52’) and narrowly missing out on a second goal for himself in the 65th minute. Wales, however, fought back late on and equalised through a Kieffer Moore header (74’).

Switzerland’s next game is on Wednesday, 16th June against Italy (21:00 CEST). They will conclude their group versus Turkey on Sunday, 20th June (18:00 CEST).
