"Only have ourselves to blame" - post-match reaction to the defeat at Union

Hear from Jonas Hofmann, Patrick Herrmann, Adi Hütter and Urs Fischer following Borussia’s 2-1 defeat to Union Berlin.

Jonas Hofmann: We started well and had control of the game. But, we were too unorganized on both their goals. It was four against two at one point and they still scored to make it 2-0. That just can’t happen. We wanted to attempt more deep runs in the second half, but Union adjusted well and continued to defend well. We should have looked for the easy pass, but weren’t able to find them. We weren’t clinical enough in the final third today, and didn’t have any clear-cut chances. My goal came too late. If it had happened 10 minutes earlier, then we might have been able to turn things around.

Patrick Herrmann: We didn’t start badly, had a lot of possession in the early stages of the game and did well in the tackles. But, Union were able to score twice off two counter-attacks. To be honest, we made things far too easy for our opponents on both goals. Coming back from 2-0 down in Berlin is not easy. Union sat back and closed the gaps. We tried to break through in the second half and tried everything we could, but we weren’t able to. We only have ourselves to blame. Now, we need to focus on what’s ahead and try to get our first win against Bielefeld in two week’s time.

Head coach Adi Hütter: It’s an unfortunate and unlucky defeat for us, because I don’t think we deserved it based on our form. Unfortunately, we conceded off two individual errors. On the first goal, we were dispossessed far too easily and on the second, we should have committed a professional foul. Despite the setbacks, my team still gave it everything and played well against a side that were sitting deep. However, we were lacking that final touch and pass. We cannot be satisfied with one point from three games, but at least we played well in two of our three games so far.

Head coach Urs Fischer (Union Berlin): My team showed desire, passion, solidarity and a strong mentality, and deserve to be complimented for their performance. We didn’t start well, and I wasn’t pleased with how we played in possession. We then made some tactical changes, and things improved from then on. After going 2-0 up, we controlled the game and had several chances to add another. Overall, I’m very pleased with our performance. Of course we’re not playing at our top level yet, but after the many changes we’ve gone through, that will take time. Today’s win was important in order to give us the confidence we need for the upcoming tasks.
