Looking for Borussia’s Player of the Month for January

Stefan Lainer, Yann Sommer, Manu Koné and Florian Neuhaus are all nominated for January’s award, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement. Fans can now vote for their favourite in the FohlenApp.

The Foals played three Bundesliga games in January, as well as one DFB-Pokal match. Stefan Lainer, Yann Sommer (x2) and Manu Koné were all awarded the Man of the Match award during this timeframe, and are now in the running to be named your Borussia Player of the Month for January, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement. Florian Neuhaus is also nominated, based on his strong performances at the start of the year.

Stefan Lainer recieved 57% of the vote and was named our Man of the Match after the 2-1 win against Bayern to open the year. Lainer scored the winning goal with a header from a corner in the 31st minute, and also delivered a tireless performance at right-back. He covered 10.2km before being taken off in the 78th minute, having also set up Florian Neuhaus’ equaliser in the 27th minute.

Yann Sommer won two Man of the Match awards in January. Sommer impressed yet again but wasn’t able to prevent the Foals from falling to a 2-1 defeat at home against Bayer Leverkusen. He was voted the Man of the Match on that occasion with 95% of all votes. Not only did the Switzerland international save two penalties from Patrik Schick (50’) and Kerem Demirbay (87’), he also made eight more saves to prevent the scoreline from running even higher. Sommer was then voted Man of the Match with 59% of the vote in the 3-0 defeat to Hannover in the DFB-Pokal. His saves prevented his side from falling to an even heavier defeat against the second-division side.

Manu Koné scored his debut Bundesliga goal in the 2-1 home defeat to Union Berlin. After some good link-up play between Breel Embolo and Jonas Hofmann, the 20-year-old took aim from the edge of the box and slotted the ball into the right corner. After a strong performance on the night, Borussia fans voted Koné as their Man of the Match with 55% of the vote. The Frenchman also had 72 touches of the ball and a pass success rate of 90% against Union.

Florian Neuhaus started all four competitive matches in January. He played in attacking midfield in the Bundesliga, and featured in defensive midfield in the DFB-Pokal. The 24-year-old is a key presence in the Borussia attack, and showcased how much of a threat he can be in front of goal. He netted the equaliser in Munich, and also had several good chances against both Hannover and Union. Head coach Adi Hütter praised the young Germany international for his work on the pitch, saying “Flo definitely understands how we want to play, and contributed a lot of effort to our game.”
