Yann Sommer is January’s player of the month

Borussia fans have voted Yann Sommer as their Player of the Month for January, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement. The 33-year-old was a landslide winner over the three other candidates.

The Foals’ number 1 dominated the vote for January’s Player of the Month. Presented by Cichon Personalmanagement and run on the FohlenApp, the Swiss national team goalkeeper saw a massive 84 percent of the votes go to him, with the other candidates Manu Koné (8%), Florian Neuhaus (4%) and Stefan Lainer (4%) not coming close to challenging him.

Sommer is in top form at the moment and was named Man of the Match in two Foals game in January. The 2-1 defeat at home to Bayer Leverkusen saw the Swiss put in a stunning performance, not just saving two penalties in the second half from Patrik Schick and Kerem Demirbay, but also making eight further saves and keeping the Foals in the match. The DFB-Pokal defeat away to Hannover also saw him make several saves to keep the game alive and prevent a heavier defeat. Alongside those performances, the 33-year-old denied Robert Lewandowski and Jamal Musiala on several occasions in Borussia’s 2-1 win away at FC Bayern, and produced even more stunning stops in the home game against Union Berlin.

The voting criteria for our Player of the Month award has changed this season. In previous years, fans were only able to select from players that had won at least one Man of the Match award during the preceding month. This season, fans will have the option of also voting for players that impressed during the previous month, either with their performances or through other actions.
