Embolo: “It was very unpredictable”

We spoke to Breel Embolo after the exciting 3-3 draw with SC Freiburg. The forward's goal in the 13th minute gave Gladbach a 2-0 lead.

Breel, how would you sum up the 3-3 against Freiburg?

Breel Embolo: It was a game that ebbed and flowed and we need time to let it sink in. We threw away a two goal lead but managed to find an equaliser in injury time. It was very unpredictable. I am delighted for Lars Stindl that he got the goal.

A classic question: Was it a point gained or two points dropped?

Embolo: That’s difficult to answer. You could say it was a point gained because we equalised in stoppage time but having said that, we also had a two goal lead away from home against a strong opponent and in that position, you want to take all three points. We would have loved to have won the game so overall, it’s probably two points dropped.

How was the game from your point of view?

Embolo: I think we were tactically very astute in the first half. After we took the lead, we tried to be compact and hit them on the counter attack.

One of them led to the second goal…

Embolo: Yes, we wanted to get the ball in behind with our counter attacks. Jonas Hofmann’s pass for my goal was outstanding. I was able to hold off Schlotterbeck and find the finish. Unfortunately, towards the end of the first half we became less dangerous and after Freiburg pulled a goal back, we found things difficult. Their goal early in the second half stirred up the crowd and gave them the momentum. We didn’t do enough after that and Freiburg turned the game on its head. This is an area of our game that we need to work on.

How can we do that?

Embolo: Everyone out on the pitch has to take more responsibility, there is nowhere to hide. This is something that happens in the mind, you can’t do it consciously or on purpose. We came into the game off the back of a bitter derby defeat but the mood against Freiburg was much different. Although we want to keep working on how we can defend leads better, the way we fought back in the dying minutes against Freiburg was a step in the right direction.
