Auf Wiedersehen, Keanan Bennetts!

After four years, Keanan Bennetts is to leave Borussia. Let’s take a look back at his time as a Foal.

“This is not a sad goodbye; but rather a celebration of all we have been through together. Thank you to an amazing team and even better fans that supported me through this turbulent journey,” wrote Keanan Bennetts on social media last Sunday. After four years in Mönchengladbach, the 23-year-old midfielder will leave the club and go on a new journey – where that may be is not yet certain. Bennetts made a total of 39 appearances in the Regionalliga West, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal for the Foals, scoring twice and notching six assists for the U23s. He wore the white shirt of VfL for a total of 2,390 minutes.

Bundesliga debut vs. Wolfsburg

London-born Bennetts moved to Borussia from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2018. A Spurs academy talent, he came through the north London club’s youth setup before making his first senior appearances for their U23 side. After moving to Germany, he also played his first games for the Foals in the U23 team, making 22 Regionalliga West appearances in his first season at the club. Bennetts, who feels most at home on the left side of midfield, made his professional debut on June 16th 2020, coming on for Lars Stindl in the 90th minute of a 3-0 win at home to VfL Wolfsburg.

In order to gain match experience, the midfielder was loaned out to English League One side Ipswich Town in October 2020. Bennetts made a total of 28 league appearances during his time at the Tractor Boys, scoring one goal and setting a further one up. He also made one appearance each in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy.

Following his return to BORUSSIA-PARK last summer, Bennetts was only able to come into first-team games as a substitute – he has made five appearances for a total of 56 minutes this season. The decision has been made not to extend his contract which expires in the summer, so his time as a Foal is at an end. Borussia Mönchengladbach would like to wish Keanan all the best for his future – once a Foal, always a Foal!

Bennetts made his Bundesliga debut against Wolfsburg on June 16th 2020.
