Borussia sign Julian Weigl from Benfica permanently

Borussia Mönchengladbach have made the transfer of Julian Weigl from Benfica permanent. The 27-year-old has already been on loan from the Portuguese side for the 2022/23 season, but has now signed a contract with the Foals until 30th June 2028.

“Julian is an important building block in our team, not only because of his footballing ability, but also because his personality,” said sporting director Roland Virkus. “He became a leader here from the very start and we’re delighted that he has committed to Borussia.” Weigl himself added: “I’m really happy that we were able to reach an agreement. I’m very excited for what lies ahead and can’t wait to crack on.”

Weigl began the season in Lisbon, playing two Primera Liga matches and a Champions League qualifier for Benfica before joining the Foals on loan. The midfielder has since featured in 19 Bundesliga games and one DFB-Pokal tie for Borussia, scoring one goal. The only matches he has missed were due to a yellow-card suspension and a syndesmosis ligament injury.

Came through at 1860

Weigl is a product of the TSV 1860 München youth academy. He made the step up to their first team at 18 years old and occasionally captained the side in the 2. Bundesliga. After 40 competitive appearances over two and a half years for 1860, he joined Borussia Dortmund in summer 2015. The man from Bad Aibling went on to lift the DFB-Pokal and the Supercup in black and yellow, featuring a total of 171 times in all competitions for BVB and scoring four goals.

In January 2020, Weigl opted to move abroad and became a regular starter at Benfica. He was named as the fans’ Player of the Season in 2020/21. He played 115 competitive matches for the Portuguese giants, finding the net five times. At international level, Weigl has won six senior caps for the Germany national team, previously featuring for the U21s (5 times), U20s (7 times) and U19s (4 times).
