Jonas Hofmann leaves Borussia after seven and a half years

Jonas Hofmann has activated his release clause, allowing him to leave Borussia Mönchengladbach and sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a fee of €10m.

"We held some intense discussions with Jonas and we fought hard to keep him at Borussia. The discussions were very open and in the end we offered him a proposal that satisfied all of his desired conditions. The fact that he has decided to activate his release clause despite that doesn’t leave us with a nice feeling," said Roland Virkus. "However, we have to respect his decision and we thank Jonas for his effort and performances at Borussia."

Jonas Hofmann signed for the Foals in January 2016, going on to establish himself as a more important member of the squad year on year. His best season at the club was the 2022/23 campaign, when Hofmann scored 12 goals and recorded 10 assists in 31 Bundesliga games. The 30-year-old also recorded two goals and two assists in two DFB-Pokal games. Overall, Hofmann made 214 competitive appearances for the Foals, recording 48 goals and 51 assists.

During his time at the club, Hofmann also earned his first call-up to the Germany national team, making his debut on 7th October 2020 in a 3-3 friendly draw against Turkey. Since then, the midfielder has accumulated 21 caps for his country, scoring four goals.

Jonas Hofmann spent seven and a half years at the club.
