7-0 at TUS Bersenbrück: Foals cruise into next Pokal round

Borussia advance commandingly in the DFB-Pokal. In the first-round match again fifth-tier side TuS Bersenbrück, held at the Bremer Brücke in Osnabrück, the Foals produced a 7-0 victory.

In front of 15,446 spectators at the sold-out Bremer Brücke in Osnabrück, the first big chance of the match belonged to the hosts TuS Bersenbrück. The Foals needed a few minutes to feel their way into the game, but then began to take more and more control. After Alassane Plea let the first good chance for Borussia go by, new signing Franck Honorat brought the Foals into the lead and with that opened the floodgates. Tomáš Čvančara, Nathan Ngoumou and then Čvančara again racked up the scoreline to 4-0 at the break. After half time, Borussia admittedly lost a little bit of tempo, but clearly remained the dominant team. With his second goal of the day, Honorat extended the lead to 5-0, before substitute Robin Hack rounded off the half-dozen. Shortly before the final whistle, another super sub struck in Grant-Leon Ranos.

Team news

In birthday boy Franck Honorat, Tomáš Čvančara and Max Wöber, three new signings were named in the starting eleven for their competitive debut for the Foals. Head coach Gerardo Seoane decided on the following side. Jonas Omlin minded the net. Joe Scally, Marvin Friedrich, Max Wöber and Luca Netz made up the backline. Ko Itakura and Julian Weigl marshalled defensive midfield. In front, Franck Honorat, Alassane Plea and Nathan Ngoumou were given the chance. Tomáš Čvančara took to the field at the spearhead of the attack.

Borussia were without Christoph Kramer and Manu Koné (recovering from knee injuries) and Hannes Wolf (muscle problems in his left thigh). Jan Olschowsky, Lukas Ullrich, Oscar Fraulo and Yvandro Borges Sanches were instead called up for the U23 away game at Alemannia Aachen.

First-half highlights

2’: The first opportunity belongs to the visitors, who advance into the penalty area from the left. Omlin parries the first effort, but from Manneh’s follow-up Borussia’s shot-stopper makes himself big and saves again.

9’: First big chance for the Foals, who quickly propel the game forwards. Honorat pulls the ball back from the right side of the penalty area towards the advancing Plea, who is through on goal. He however doesn’t quite catch his first-time effort and the ball goes wide of the post.

22’: Following a corner, the ball lands at the feet of Čvančara, who gives it to Honorat. The Frenchman aims for the far corner, his shot is deflected and as a result is unsaveable for the goalkeeper – 1-0 to Gladbach.

26’: After a corner, the leaping Wöber meets a header, but hits the post. The rebound lands at the feet of Čvančara, but he misses the goal from point-blank range.

27’: A great move from the Foals makes it 2-0! Čvančara drives the ball forward from the right side and sees Plea in the centre. He again moves it on to Ngoumou on the left who lets fly and fires into the far corner.

32’: The Foals win the ball in their own half, from which Ngoumou flies forward on the left side. The Frenchman coolly rounds Bersenbrück’s goalkeeper Böhrmann and pulls it back to Čvančara – 3-0 to Gladbach.

35’: The Foals extend their lead to 4-0! Again they play quickly. This time, Honorat pulls the ball from the right side into the centre for Čvančara, who finds the back of the net.

39’: Another beautiful move from the Foals, at the end of which Ngoumou lets fly from the left of the penalty area, but his shot hits the underside of the bar and comes back into play.

Second-half highlights

50’: After Honorat and Ngoumou had swapped flanks at half time, the former steams forward on the left to the edge of the penalty area. His subsequent effort is blocked by a Bersenbrück player and hits the side-netting.

56’: Honorat collects a long ball, controls it skilfully and slams it home for 5-0.

77’: A combination of two super subs makes it 6-0! Ranos is fed by Plea in the centre and then gives it to Hack on the left. The ball initially seems to have been played too far wide, but Hack chases it down and completes the half-dozen from a tight angle.

79’: Hack arrives on the scene from the left again. This time his effort goes just wide of the left post.

85’: Ranos has the goal at his mercy, but can’t convert a one-on-one against the TuS keeper Böhmann after an excellent through ball from Plea.

89’: Now Ranos has his goal: Plea plays it across to Ranos in the penalty area, who feints twice before eventually shooting into the lower right corner – 7-0.
