Seoane ahead of #BMGRBL: “We have to defend compactly as a team”

Head coach Gerardo Seoane answered journalists’ questions at the press conference ahead of the Foals’ Bundesliga home game on Saturday (15:30 CEST) against RB Leipzig. Here are his most important quotes:

Gerardo Seoane on...

...Nico Elvedi’s contract extension: There were already positive signals from Nico last weekend, which is why he came on the second half against Darmstadt. Because of his clear commitment to Borussia, he’ll now have more chances to play again and has the same opportunities as the rest of the squad. We’re happy that he’s extended his contract as he’s put in outstanding performances in the past few years, is a leader in the dressing room and brings experience.

...the current injury situation: We still have hope that Tomáš Čvančara will be okay for Saturday, although he hasn’t trained with the team at all this week. Christoph Kramer and Manu Koné have trained fully this week and will most likely be available on Saturday. They’ve done well on the training pitch and feel ready.

...RB Leipzig’s playing style: I expect a completely different match against Leipzig compared to last week. They have some quick, versatile players that can exploit the space well. For us it’s about defending compactly as a team, limiting the spaces in behind and pushing forwards to create goalscoring chances.

...the first half against Darmstadt 98: As a coaching team, we’re scrutinising everything about this performance. We’ve analysed and discussed the match as a team because it’s important to me to listen to the players’ opinions too.

...the Foals’ start to the season: Due to the number of outgoings and the difficult fixture list, you of course have to evaluate the situation differently. Despite that, we’re not happy with two points from the first four games. We and the whole team know that the season won’t be easy. I also sense that the fans know this, and they’ve always given us positive feedback through their great support.

...Manu Koné’s return: Manu brings a lot of quality to our squad through his dynamism and ball-winning ability. We can’t expect him though to be at exactly the same point as he was before his injury and so we’ll give him enough time. He’s got to play in the team again now, gain match practice and get back into the rhythm of simple things like the passing game.

...Rocco Reitz’s contract extension and potential: He has grown continuously in the past few months and got to play in the team due to good performances. He’s therefore also earned a contract extension. Rocco can gain more experience here at this level and develop further.

Nico Elvedi has extended his contract with the Foals until 2027.
Manu Koné and Christoph Kramer have taken part in full training this week.
