Wöber and Austria heading to the EUROs

With Max Wöber named in the starting eleven, the Austria national side secured qualification for EURO 2024 in Germany after a 1-0 win in Azerbaijan.

You could see what it meant to him in a photo shared on Christoph Baumgartner’s Instagram account. Max Wöber (photo: imago images/ANP) is seen clenching both fists and celebrating yesterday’s 1-0 win in Azerbaijan together with three teammates. This victory has already confirmed Austria’s place at EURO 2024 in Germany.

Just like previously in the 3-2 defeat to Belgium, when Wöber played 71 minutes on the left of defence, the Borussia man was named in the starting eleven for the visit to Baku. This time though, he was deployed at centre-back and completed the full 90 minutes. Marcel Sabitzer struck the only goal of the game with a 48th-minute penalty for handball.

With 16 points ahead of their final qualifying match in Estonia on 16th November, Austria can no longer be overtaken in second place in Group F and have therefore become the eighth team to qualify for the European Championship.
