Fukuda: “It’s given my confidence a real boost”
In this interview, Shio Fukuda speaks about his first year as a Gladbach player, making his Bundesliga debut against Leverkusen a few weeks ago and his aims for his time at the club.
Shio, you’ve been at Borussia Mönchengladbach for a year. How have you found settling in here and what do you like the most about Germany?
Shio Fukuda: My teammates and the people at the club really look after me, which helped me a lot when I was still finding my feet here. The whole set-up is amazing and I’m really enjoying my time here. In particular, I like the Gladbach fans’ fantastic support. I'm also a big fan of German food.
How did your first year here go from a sporting perspective?
Fukuda: I didn’t find it easy at first, because the physicality and pace of the games in Germany is completely different to Japanese football. Over time, I managed to adapt to European football and the higher standard of play. I also learned that I can score a goal in any situation, irrespective of the initial pass.
You’ve been a part of the first-team squad since January. What does that mean to you and how much did Ko Itakura help you settle in?
Fukuda: I’m happy to be a part of the first-team squad. It’s given my confidence a real boost. Whether it's in training or during a game, I always try to play to the best of my ability. Ko coming from the same country as me has been a massive help. He gives me a lot of support both on and off the pitch.
You made your Bundesliga debut on matchday 19 in the away clash against Bayer Leverkusen. How were you feeling in the moment you stepped onto the pitch?
Fukuda: I wanted Borussia to win the game at all costs. When I came on, I was thinking more about my team and the game rather than the fact that I was making my debut. I would have liked to help us come out on top by scoring a goal.
You made brief cameos in both of the following away games in Munich and Leipzig. What advice did the head coach give you before you came off the bench?
Fukuda: He wanted me to defend and press with aggression. I was instructed to exploit the space in behind their back line. I tried my absolute hardest to do everything he asked of me.
What are you hoping to achieve in your next games for Borussia?
Fukuda: In general, I’m looking to improve my personal performance. Of course, I’m hoping to get some more minutes and play a part in the team’s success. I would really love to score for Borussia and have the goal count towards a win for us.
