2-2 against Hungary - EURO journey continues for Ginter, Neuhaus and Hofmann

Foals Matthias Ginter, Florian Neuhaus and Jonas Hofmann have reached the round of 16 of the UEFA EURO 2020 with Germany after picking up a 2-2 draw against Hungary on Wednesday evening.

In the third and final group match, German head coach Joachim Löw again named Matthias Ginter (photo: imago images/GEPA pictures) in the starting lineup alongisde Mats Hummels and Antonio Rüdiger. Florian Neuhaus came on as a substitute, while Jonas Hofmann, who has recently returned to training after a knee injury, was not in the squad.

Ginter almost on the scoresheet

The game in Munich was a balanced one, with Hungary opening the scoring through Adam Szalai (11'). Germany looked to hit back immediately and looked to attack down the right through Ginter and Joshua Kimmich. When Hummels hit the bar with a header, it was the Borussia centre back who had the next chance to equalise but narrowly missed in a tough position (22').

The second half brought more excitement, the controlling German side earning themselves a deserved equaliser through Kai Havertz in the 66th minute. However, the joy was short-lived. Immediately after the resulting kick off, Andreas Schäfer took advantage of a gap in the Germany defence and headed in to put Hungary back in the lead. Hungary's passionate defence of their replenished one-goal advantage made it extremely difficult for the German team to create clear scoring chances, but Löw's team never gave in and were rewarded for their efforts in the 84th minute with Leon Goretzka's shot found the back of the net. With a draw and one point from the final group game, Germany secured a second-place finish in Group F and will now face England in the round of 16 at Wembley Stadium, London on Tuesday 29th June (18:00 CEST).

Thuram through, Bénes out

In the other Group F match, Portugal and France also drew 2-2. Borussia attacker Marcus Thuram was not in the squad, but would be pleased to see his side win the group and can look forward to seeing some familiar faces in the next round. On Monday 28th June (21:00 CEST), France will take on Foals Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi, Breel Embolo and Denis Zakaria's Switzerland in Bucharest.

For László Bénes and Slovakia, however, EURO 2020 is over. Bénes came off the bench in the closing minutes of the game as his side suffered a 5-0 loss to Spain.
