Embolo wins Borussia’s Goal of the Year for 2021

Borussia fans have voted for Breel Embolo’s bicycle kick during the 3-1 win in Wolfsburg as the Goal of the Year, with almost a third of all votes cast for the Swiss attacker’s acrobatic effort.

Gladbach supporters have chosen Breel Embolo’s bicycle kick scored during the 3-1 victory away at Wolfsburg as their 2021 Goal of the Year, with this goal winning 31% of the overall vote, followed by Ramy Bensebaini (23% voted for his goal against FC Bayern in the DFB-Pokal) and Florian Neuhaus (his goal in the 3-2 victory over FC Bayern won 15% of the vote) in second and third place. “I would like to thank all the fans who voted for me. As a striker, you always want to score goals, and when they’re as beautiful as the one I scored in Wolfsburg and it helps the team en route to victory, it makes it even better,” commented Embolo.

The Foals won 3-1 away to VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 7 of the current campaign. Embolo opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a bicycle kick. Jonas Hoffmann whipped the ball in from a free-kick on the left-hand side, and following Denis Zakaria’s attempt to volley it towards goal, the ball came towards Embolo, who produced an acrobatic effort from six yards out and scored sublimely. “It’s not something we’d been practicing in training. It was simply an instinctual movement which put us on our way to three points, which was more important,” reminisces Embolo, whose goal came second in Sportschau’s “November Goal of the Month” award.
