Itakura: “Need to build on it against Schalke”

In an interview, Ko Itakura spoke about facing his former club this weekend, Borussia’s current position in the table and his role within the team.

Ko, we celebrated our first away win of the season in Hoffenheim last weekend. How important was it to get your first win in 2023?

Itakura: Those were three very important points for us. We had lost both our previous two games and had set our aims high against Hoffenheim. I’m happy that we were finally able to get our first win of the year. Now, we need to build on it this weekend against Schalke.

What will we need to do in order to get a win at home against Schalke?

Itakura: Schalke are a very energetic side. The players give everything for the club and they will fight hard in order to get something from this match. We need to be prepared for that by remaining fully focused and playing our game. If we do so, then we will be able to be successful on Saturday.

You played for Schalke last season. Will this be a special game for you?

Itakura: Of course. I played for them last season and felt good there. But, I want to win this match for Borussia and will give everything for my current team.

Are you looking forward to seeing some of your former teammates?

Itakura: I’m really looking forward to seeing several familiar faces again, that goes for everyone. I had a good time in Gelsenkirchen and it will be nice to see my old teammates again.

Let’s put the focus back on Borussia: what do you think about your current position in the league and what can you still achieve this season?

Itakura: We’re in eighth right now, but I think that we can improve on that still. We have a lot of quality in our squad and will hopefully be able to climb a few spots in the table.

You were out injured for two months prior to the winter break. How tough was that period for you?

Itakura: It was my first major injury so it was a very tough time for me. I also suffered the injury before the World Cup, which was unfortunate. I tried to stay positive and worked hard in order to be back on the pitch as soon as I could.

What was your time at the World Cup like?

Itakura: It was a fantastic experience and a very special feeling to be representing my country at a World Cup. I can’t even find the right words to describe it.

You have featured for the full 90 minutes of every game so far this year for Borussia. It’s as if you never left!

Itakura: I worked extremely hard on my comeback, together with the entire physio staff. I’m a player who always gives 100%, both for my team and for the win. I just need to continue on like I have been in the last few games.

Do you see yourself as calling the shots in defence now?

Itakura: No, I wouldn’t say so. I think it’s either Nico Elvedi or Jonas Omlin who fit that role best. Although [Omlin] has only been here a short while, he has taken up responsibility right away. We communicate well with each other in defence. Of course I try to communicate a lot as well, in order to help us keep our shape.

Ko Itakura will come up against his former club, FC Schalke 04, on the weekend.
