Borussia into Pokal Round of 16 after 3-1 win over Heidenheim

Borussia came out victorious in the second battle with 1. FC Heidenheim and advanced from the second round of the DFB-Pokal with a 3-1 win. Jordan set the Foals on the path to victory with a brace after only eight minutes.

Just like in the Bundesliga game on Saturday, the Foals had the perfect start. It was again a corner that put Borussia ahead early, when Jordan turned home Robin Hack’s delivery. Five minutes later, Gladbach made it 2-0 with their very next attack. Jordan was again in the perfect position in the centre and left Eicher in the goal with no chance from close range after he had been set up superbly by Ngoumou. The match then began to calm down somewhat. In the 44th minute, Robin Hack wrapped up the game with his second competitive goal in Foals colours from Luca Netz’s ball in. After the break, the Foals held on to their win and conceded very few chances until Beck’s late consolation goal in the 78th minute.

TEAM NEWS

Head coach Gerardo Seoane made two changes to his starting eleven from the Bundesliga game against 1. FC Heidenheim three days ago. Joe Scally, Nico Elvedi, Maximilian Wöber and Luca Netz made up the back four in front of goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas. Rocco Reitz, Julian Weigl and Manu Koné started in central midfield. Nathan Ngoumou and Robin Hack occupied the wings, while Jordan played in attack.

Borussia were still without Ko Itakura (ankle operation), Tony Jantschke (muscle problems), Hannes Wolf (meniscus tear), Yvandro Borges Sanches (thigh) and Jonas Omlin (recovering from a shoulder operation) due to injury.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

3’: Jordan meets Robin Hack’s corner in the middle. His first-time finish takes a slight deflection off Pieringer and leaves Eicher with no chance in the bottom left corner to hand the Foals an early lead!

8’: Reitz drives forward from midfield and plays it to Koné, who feeds the advancing Ngoumou on the right wing. Borussia’s number 19 speeds to the touchline and squares it for Jordan in the middle, who’s in the perfect position again and makes it 2-0 to the Foals.

13’: Borussia keep the pressure on. Jordan climbs highest to meet Ngoumou’s cross, but his header is just over the bar.

44’: Weigl plays an impressive diagonal ball to Netz. The 20-year-old gets to the ball relatively unchallenged and feeds Hack, who meets the ball perfectly from around nine yards and buries into the far corner. 3-0 to the Foals!

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

53’: Weigl and Scally play a one-two through the Heidenheim defence, but the shot from Borussia’s on-field captain is too central and Eicher is able to save.

78’: Heidenheim get one back from a short corner. Substitute Theuerkauf plays the ball into the penalty area, where Beck gets his head on it and leaves Nicolas with no chance from close range.
