Borussia sign Guido Streichsbier as assistant coach

Borussia Mönchengladbach have signed Guido Streichsbier as assistant coach, completing the first team coaching staff. Streichsbier joins the Foals from the DFB (German Football Association), where he was head coach of the U19 national team. He has signed a contract until 30th June 2027.

“Guido has been responsible for U18 until U20 Germany youth internationals during the past nine years. We are pleased to have been able to sign such an experienced coach, who is highly qualified for our needs. He will work with us especially in terms of individual training and talent development,” said Borussia’s director for sport Roland Virkus. “We would like to thank those officials at the DFB who agreed to this transfer.”

Guido Streichsbier (photo: imago images/Pressefoto Baumann) began his coaching career in 2004 at the same place he had finished his playing career two years earlier: TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The Karlruher-born coach was initially responsible for the U17s, winning the German Championship in 2008. Two years later, he led TSG’s U19 team to victory in the U19 DFB-Pokal. Streichsbier’s further coaching jobs include 1. FC Kaiserslautern’s U17s and the FC-Astoria Walldorf senior team, where he won promotion into the Regionalliga in 2014 and qualified for the DFB-Pokal for the first time. In 2014, he then joined the DFB, initially coaching the U18s and being responsible for U18, U19, U20 cycles since then, most recently coaching the U19s.

As a player, the 53-year-old came through at Karlsruher SC and was also in the first team squad there from 1990 until 1992. Following spells at 1. FC Pforzheim and TSF Ditzingen, he then joined TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in 1999, winning the Landespokal Baden in 2002. By the end of his career, the former attacking midfielder had made a total of 199 appearances in the Regionalliga South, the third division at that time, and the fourth-division Oberliga Baden-Württemberg, as well as five DFB-Pokal appearances.

“Guido completes new head coach Gerardo Seoane’s coaching team alongside assistant coach Patrick Schnarwiler and fitness coach Nicolas Dyon,” said Virkus. There is another change to the Foals’ coaching staff, with René Flägel taking over the position of team manager on 1st July. The 28-year-old joins from VfL Osnabrück. He has held the same role at the newly-promoted second division side since August 2020.
